2D&3D Game Comparison

Mario Games

New Super Mario Bros (2D)                   Mario 3D World (3D)

Nintendo has made 2d and 3d Mario games for years but here is a comparison from the 2D version and the 3D version from 2 of their games.

The artistic style is almost compatible from both versions except the 3d version has had a better touch up with the graphics and has features like shadows and you have a better depth of the world but more realism has been used for the 3d version like the grass comes off the edges of the hills and the clouds look more puffy, also it is less blocky while some areas has kept there 2dish blocky effect like the side of the hill which is straight up with no curves or bumps and the blocks still have the corners on them.

The 2d version of the game is more of an 8-bit game while the 3d game would be 32 or 64 bits as more pixels would be used which also requires more memory for the bigger file type.

For the 3d version to run smoothly the graphics have probably been optimized so that it can load in quicker and use less memory on the hard drive and the RAM, but the 2D version might have been optimised as well so that it uses as little memory as possible for a better frame rate as this game was put on the DS which can be slow at times.

The images for the 2D game are quite simple so they would have been easy to develop them on any type of image creation program while the 3D game would have required more attention as it would take more time as well as more detail also only specific programs would have been used as not all image creation programs can support 3D image creation.
